Helping an Electrical Company Increase Revenue Per Service Call
580 Electric teamed up with Infacto Digital to build a streamlined system that will allow field service techs to present customers with the right product to fit their needs, as well as allow field techs to track their sales and commission earnings.
The Result
$859 in additional revenue tracked on day one.
$100 in employee bonuses paid out.
I built a simple internal tool for an electrical company that helps technicians earn bonuses when they sell additional work during service calls.
The business gets more revenue from jobs they’re already running.
The employees make more money.
And the customer gets more things taken care of while the electrician is already at their home.
The Opportunity
This electrical company goes into around 30 new homes every week.
A customer may call because they need one specific thing fixed.
But while the technician is there, they ask:
“Is there anything else you’d like for us to look at while we’re here?”
About 7 out of 10 times, the homeowner has another two or three things they want done.
That creates a huge opportunity.
The company wanted to encourage technicians to look for those opportunities without making them feel pushy or overly sales-focused.
They also wanted a simple way to reward employees when they helped generate more revenue.
What I Built
I created a simple bonus tracking system with a team leaderboard.
When a technician sells an additional service, it gets added to the system.
The technician can see how much extra money they’ve earned, and the team can see who is leading for the month.
That made the bonus program feel more immediate and more fun.
Instead of waiting until payday to see what they earned, employees could watch their progress throughout the month.
I Went Into the Field With the Team
I didn’t want to build something that only looked good sitting behind a desk.
So I spent a day riding along with the electricians and watching them use it during real service calls.
That helped me spot small problems that would have been easy to miss otherwise.
If something felt slow, confusing, or annoying, I changed it.
I was making updates between service calls from the van.
The goal was simple:
Make the tool fit the way the business already works instead of forcing the business to change around the tool.
Day-One Results
On the first day:
$859 in additional revenue was tracked.
$100 in bonuses were paid to employees.
And that came from work the company may have otherwise missed.
Why It Worked
The system created a win for everyone.
The business owner increases revenue from existing service calls.
The employees earn more money when they help identify additional work.
The customer gets more things taken off their to-do list in a single visit.
That’s the kind of software I like building.
Not software for the sake of software.
Tools that make a business run better, help employees perform better, and create a measurable financial return.
